“Are lesbian families really all that different?”
“What do I need to know about gender and pregnancy?”
In this full day workshop, participants will understand the nuances of who LGBTQ people are and why serving these families well requires a unique set of background knowledge, counseling skills and clinical expertise. From understanding gender to uncovering heterosexism to undoing internalized homophobia, this workshop will prepare you to create a fully welcoming and affirming midwifery practice. Population health risks, legal issues, and common LGBTQ family structures will be addressed. The basics of providing preconception care will be presented, including donor selection, insemination, health education and pre-pregnancy screening, as well as special areas of concern for LGBTQ families in the preconception period. This workshop is an excellent foundation for continuing with MAIA Midwifery’s “Training Program for Midwives Serving LGBTQ Families”. More info at: mana.org
